Explain the importance of reading and math in the fire service.
Objectives:
1. Review the written Firefighter Exam
2. Demonstrate the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) Skills
3. Participate in a mock CPAT
Today the Introduction to Firefighting Class had the opportunity to participate in a mock CPAT. The CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) is a physical test that many fire departments are requiring applicants to pass in order to obtain a job as an entry level firefighter. The test is composed of 8 stations that mimic fireground tasks. While all of the students had the opportunity to practice each station individually, six students chose to participate in the entire course which has a 10 minute 20 second time limit and requires candidates to wear a SCBA and PPE which weighs approximately 50 pounds. The students performed very well, but they gained a great deal of respect for the toughness and rigors of the fire service. The 8 CPAT stations are as follows:
1. Stair climb for 3 minutes with a 25 pound high rise hose pack
2. Drag 200 foot of uncharged hose around a 90 degree obstacle.
3. Carry fire equipment (smoke ejector fan) for 150 feet.
4. Use a 10 pound sledge hammer to move a tractor tire to simulate forcing a door.
5. Raise and extend a 24 foot extension ladder.
6. Go through the maze to simulate a dark, smoke filled environment.
7. Drag a 165 pound rescue manikin 150 feet.
8. Lift a 45 pound Olympic bar 32 times to simulate pulling ceiling to search for hidden fire.
