Today the Firefighter I class took time to learn the basic principles of VES (vent enter search). VES is an advanced, often controversial fire skill in which a firefighter enters a burning building ahead of a hoseline via a window to search an individual room. This skill puts a firefighter at risk, but can reap great rewards by allowing the firefighter to access a trapped victim more quickly than following an attack team and carrying out a traditional primary search. The students listened to a lecture, participated in a discussion, and finally practiced the skill.
