CTC Students Finish 1152

Thursday night, despite inclimate weather, 4 CTC students passed the evaluation portion of their 1152 Basic Firefighter Course.  As long as the students pass their written test, they will be certified firefighters in the State of SC.  CTC has had 6 students complete the 1152 course this year, with many more already enrolled in an upcoming summer course.  Mr. Riddle has been an Assistant Instructor in all of these students classes held at the Anderson County Fire Training Center.  The students who have completed 1152 are:  Eian Simpson, Wyatt Fulbright, Stephen Eller, Dakotah McConnell, Ryan Davis, and Landon Epps.  Congratulations to all of these students.

CTC Says Goodbye to 6 Seniors

Thursday was the last day for the Seniors in Firefighter I Class.  Although the students are not considered completers due to having only one year in the program, the students gained valuable knowledge of the fire service.  I wish each of them the best in all of their endevors.

Firefighter I 5/24/11

Objectives:

Today the Firefighter I class took time to learn the basic principles of VES (vent enter search).  VES is an advanced, often controversial fire skill in which a firefighter enters a burning building ahead of a hoseline via a window to search an individual room.  This skill puts a firefighter at risk, but can reap great rewards by allowing the firefighter to access a trapped victim more quickly than following an attack team and carrying out a traditional primary search.  The students listened to a lecture, participated in a discussion, and finally practiced the skill.

Describe the steps in giving care for a person with an injured arm by appying a rigid splint, a sling, and a binder.

Objectives:

Today the Introduction Class used class time to prepare for "The Challenge."  "The Challenge" is a series of skills that the students have learned over the course of the year.  The students are timed in these skills and their times are ranked against not only the students in their class, but students in the entire program.  The students enjoy the competition, especially when a sophomore posts a better time than a junior or senior on an event.  The events include: PPE, SCBA, the maze, and team maze.  The final event of The Challenge is a 5 event individual challenge that includes a stair climb with a high rise pack, the maze, window entry and egress from a ground ladder, going through a constricted opening, and tool carry all while wearing full PPE with SCBA.

How do you feel about the death of Osama bin Laden?  How do you feel it will affect America in coming days?

Objectives:

Today the students had the opportunity to learn about the Denver Drill.  Students were taught about how Denver firefighter Mark Langvardt died in a fire in 1992 and the steps the Denver Fire Department took after his death to ensure that a fatality like that would not happen again.  Students used the CTC Denver Drill Prop to practice various methods of firefighter confined space rescues.  The Introduction to Firefighitng Class also used a few "new" methods that were not practiced by the Firefighter I Class to rescue the downed firefighter.  The students have worked very hard over the last two days and have really gained a great appreciation for how physical firefighting really is.
