Explain the importance of reading and math in the fire service.
Objectives:
1. Review the written Firefighter Exam
2. Demonstrate the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) Skills
3. Participate in a mock CPAT
Today the Introduction to Firefighting Class had the opportunity to participate in a mock CPAT. The CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) is a physical test that many fire departments are requiring applicants to pass in order to obtain a job as an entry level firefighter. The test is composed of 8 stations that mimic fireground tasks. While all of the students had the opportunity to practice each station individually, six students chose to participate in the entire course which has a 10 minute 20 second time limit and requires candidates to wear a SCBA and PPE which weighs approximately 50 pounds. The students performed very well, but they gained a great deal of respect for the toughness and rigors of the fire service. The 8 CPAT stations are as follows:
1. Stair climb for 3 minutes with a 25 pound high rise hose pack
2. Drag 200 foot of uncharged hose around a 90 degree obstacle.
3. Carry fire equipment (smoke ejector fan) for 150 feet.
4. Use a 10 pound sledge hammer to move a tractor tire to simulate forcing a door.
5. Raise and extend a 24 foot extension ladder.
6. Go through the maze to simulate a dark, smoke filled environment.
7. Drag a 165 pound rescue manikin 150 feet.
8. Lift a 45 pound Olympic bar 32 times to simulate pulling ceiling to search for hidden fire.

Journal:
Describe the proper ground ladder tip placement for the following scenarios: Rescue, entry, ventilation, and hose stream into the window.
Objective:
1. Demonstrate various ground ladder rescue techniques on conscious and unconscious victims.
The inclement weather did not hinder the AM and PM Firefighter I classes from training today. The students went straight to work and learned that fires occur in the sun and in the rain.

Journal:
Explain the importance of SCBA air management.
Today the Introduction to Firefighting Class learned a valuable lesson about hard work and the fire service. The class spent the majority of the class washing, waxing, and cleaning the fire engine. The class was taught that fire departments take great pride in their apparatus and the apparatus are cleaned on a daily basis at career fire departments. The sophomores did an excellent job in shining up the old engine.

The Return of the Mack
The 1979 Mack Fire Engine which was donated to the program by the Belton Fire Department returned back to service today to rejoin the CTC Firefighting Program. The Mack had been out of service in need of some repairs for most of the school year. The fine professionals at M&M Fire Apparatus repaired and serviced the truck. Mr. Riddle and Mr. Graham from welding took the truck on its maiden voyage around the parking lot. The only thing the truck needs now is a name. That debate will officially begin among students to find a name for the truck.
